Outside Lands 2013 - Just a Few Lesser Known Bands Set Guide

Its that time of year again! Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park is upon us! Beginning a little before Friday, San Francisco will be flooded by a generous supply of various artists, musicians, and vendors joining together for three days and nights filled to the brim with creativity, nature, fun and even a Beatle! The full line up and day-by-day schedule is available on the Outside Lands Website. Further information on what to bring, weather conditions, how to get there and where to park is also available on the site. The variety and amount of bands can be a bit overwhelming. If you’re not sure or set on a specific lineup take a look below for some of our featured favorites for each day who are a little lesser known or not main headliners.

Friday:

Anuhea - Hawaiian contemporary folk rock singer and songwriter. Born and raised on the island of Maui Anuhea boasts a sweet melodious voice perfect for enjoying the early afternoon in Golden Gate Park lounging on a blanket. Her album Right Love, Wrong Time is listed as one of the iTunes top 100 albums since 2009. Check out her some of her songs here!

Yeasayer - Considered a Psychedelic Rock/Pop band hailing from Brooklyn these guys will have you subconsciously bouncing around while you find yourself focused on each word out of their main vocalist’s mouth. With a style all their own they are definitely worth going to see before saving your spot at Paul McCartney’s stage!

Band of Horses and Surfer Blood are both alternative rock favorites for sure! Daughter is another band with an indie folk feel but a style all their own, definitely worth a go-see! If you dont already know, Paul McCartney is scheduled for an almost 3 hr set Sunday night, do not miss it!

Saturday:

Gary Clark Jr - He has stated that he is "influenced by blues, jazz, soul [and] country, as well as hip hop". Clark's musical trademarks are his extremely fuzzy guitar sound and smooth vocal style. He has been describes as the future of Texas blues. His sound is epitomized in his tune “Bright Lights” heard here. If you miss the good old days of rock with a purpose Gary Clark Jr is a set not to be overlooked!

Mother Hips - A local San Francisco Rock Band these guys have been around for going on 23 years now. They have a great sound and upbeat feel with positive messages. Check them out here or on youtube, some of our favorite songs are “Mission in Vain” “Time Sick Son of a Grizzly Bear” and “White Falcon Fuzz”

Tallest Man on Earth - Kristian Matsson a Swedish Singer-Songwriter (aka Tallest Man on Earth) has toured with Bon Iver, been compared to the likes of Bob Dylan, and leaves long lasting impressions with his charismatic stage performances.  He is careful to qualify his influences saying, "I don't consider my work to be a part of any tradition. This is how I play. This is how I write songs". Check out his whole album “The Wild Hunt” here. Unfortunately, he will be playing at the same time as Mother Hips but either/or would be a good opener to the YeahYeahYeahs around 6:30-7pm

The Head and The Heart - An Indie/folk pop band from Seattle Washington their singles have been used on plenty of tv sitcom series such as How I Met Your Mother and Chuck. The band self-released their debut album The Head and The Heart in June 2009, selling it at concerts, by word of mouth, and through local record stores. In the ensuing months the album sold 10,000 copies.Their music plays heavily on the trio of vocal harmonies, piano and violin melodies, and prominent drums and percussion.

Pheonix and Nine Inch Nails are considered the Headliners for Saturday evening.

Sunday:

Foals - Great compliment to the rest of the alternative bands featured at Outside Lands 2013 Foals music is mellow, unique, and relatable. With somber undertones Foals reaches into ones soul and pulls out the sorrow to be expressed and felt deeply.  Some of our favorite tunes by them are “My number”, “Milk and Black Spiders” and “Spanish Sahara”. So much great instrumental and vocal work ahead.

MsMr - brandishing a funky feel with very sultry vocals this duo from New York has been compared to the likes of Lana Del Rey, Florence and the Machine, and Kavinsky. We love both their singles “Hurricane” and “Fantasy” but are head over heels for their song “Salty Sweet”. Claiming a great beat and raw lyrics their set is a must for OL 2013.

Other Must-Sees for Sunday are Vampire Weekend, Hall and Oates, Willie Nelson, and, of course, The Red Hot Chili Peppers!
