Post 2008 some may wonder how realty as a profession has stayed afloat, what with Trulia, Zillow, and a plethora of other home buying websites providing basically the same services. The fact of the matter is, those sites do not provide the same or even comparable professional services that a skilled and experienced real estate agent can offer.

According to the National Association of Realtors and contrary to logical thought, real estate agents are being as widely used as ever. Up from 69% in 2001 and 89% in 2012, 91% of buyers are retaining agents to aid them in their housing searches in 2013!

In our post-crash world the reality of the real estate market is much more complex. Tighter Lending standards and the presence of foreclosures and short sales…

If there is one thing California as a state tends to struggle with it would be the public school system. More often than not the  overall comparisons with other states are unfavorable to California. The results support the impression that California’s relative standing in the nation has declined over the last three decades. The combination of a student population with relatively great needs, relatively low funding levels, and relatively inadequate resources may have contributed to California’s comparatively low levels of student academic achievement.

Luckily, as natives of Marin we have the fortuitous advantage of being the exception to the rule here. The public schools of the districts in Marin are some of the top performing schools in the nation.…

…And the market keeps getting stronger. Currently, there are 807 homes on the market in Marin of which 390 are in MarinRealEstateescrow. Since our last report in May, 1,146 homes have been sold! The average price for a home in Marin is $1.26 million, which is higher than the peak of 2007, and the number of homes sold is up 24% from July 2012. Those statistics are pretty impressive, especially considering where we were this time last year. The forecasters predict even more appreciation in 2014, that is, of course, if the economy maintains itself. So what does all this mean for the buyer and seller?

From the seller's standpoint, this is an excellent time to be on market because the inventory is at an all-time low. Buyers are determining values, not by what has sold, but…

Make A Stand Lemon-Aid

After seeing a photo of two Nepalese boys about her age holding hands, but weighed down by large boulders strapped across their heads one little girl was affronted to learn that, no, slavery had not ended with Abraham Lincoln. In her own words, “I wanted to do something, because compassion is not compassion without action”. She did so by making a stand. Literally. Vivienne Harr, now nine years old, made a lemon stand in Fairfax every day for a year in order to benefit a Half Moon Bay based NGO called Not For Sale in hopes of ending child slavery worldwide.  With the support of her family and community she was successful in raising over $100,000 in profits for the organization.  Talk about taking what you know and using it to make…

Slow Parenting, A Revolution for Marin Parents?

A local Marinite, Susan Sachs Lipman, has been stirring up the parenting pot all around the country with her book Fed up with Frenzy, a project that developed out of her blog promoting the ideals of ‘slow parenting’. I hesitate to call this a new trend in parenting as in truth it is just a return to a more traditional type of parenting prior to the massive over use of technology and tv in the upbringing of young kids.

Susan Sachs Lipman has been at the forefront of the movement against strictly scheduled and jam-packed lives of both kids and parents. Remember when playtime began with five simple words, “Mom, can I go outside?” Lipman wishes to enlighten modern parents as to how the most simple of…
